A human psychology

The second factor involved in the assumption of human nature is that Christ took an ordinary human psychology. He bacame man 'by taking to Himself a true body and a reasonable soul'(Shorter Catechism, Answer 22). This truth, too, was denied by an early heresy, Apollinarianism, the product of over-sensitiveness regading the deity of Christ. Apollinarius was so concerned to safeguard the fact that Christ was God that he minimised His humanness, and that has been a very common tendency in the church right down to the present day. His position was, that when God became incarnate He indeed took a human body, but in the place of a human soul there was simply God the Logos, the Eternal Word. There was a union between a divine nature and a human body but there was no human psychology. The church of the late fourth and early fitth centruy discussed this issue thoroughly, repudiated this construction of Apollinarius and insisted that just as in Christ there was complete and perfect Godhead so there was complete and perfect manhood. Nothing that was necessary to humanness was lacking to Him. Just as there was a complete human physicalness so there was a complete human psychology(A Faith to Live by, Fearn: Christian Focus Publications, 1998.p.118-119).

Secondly, the uni-personality of Christ. Although truly divine and truly and perfectly human He was (and is ) one Person. The essential point ehre is that whatever He did was done by the Son of God. He made the word and He died on the cross. A nature did not do it. He did it. He bled., and died to take away my sin. He gave, not merely His sufferings, not only His human nature: He gave Himself(p.127).
