Article 11: The Holy Spirit's Work in Conversion

 

Moreover, when God carries out this good pleasure in his chosen ones, or works true conversion in them, he not only sees to it that the gospel is proclaimed to them outwardly, and enlightens their minds powerfully by the Holy Spirit so that they may rightly understand and discern the things of the Spirit of God, but, by the effective operation of the same regenerating Spirit, he also penetrates into the inmost being of man, opens the closed heart, softens the hard heart, and circumcises the heart that is uncircumcised. He infuses new qualities into the will, making the dead will alive, the evil one good, the unwilling one willing, and the stubborn one compliant; he activates and strengthens the will so that, like a good tree, it may be enabled to produce the fruits of good deeds.

 

제 11 항: 회심에 있어서의 성령의 역사

 

게다가, 하나님께서 이런 호의를 당신의 택하신 자들에게 성취하실 때에, 혹은 그들 속에 참된 회심을 일으키실 때에, 단지 복음이 그들에게 외적으로 선포되고 그래서 그들이 하나님의 영의 일들을 옳게 이해하고 분간하도록 성령에 의해서 강력하게 그들의 마음을 밝혀주시는 것에만 관심을 갖는 것이 아니라, 중생케하는 동일한 영의 효과적인 활동에 의해서 사람의 가장 내밀한 곳에까지 침투해 들어가서 닫혀진 마음을 열어제치고, 굳어있는 마음을 부드럽게 하시며 할례받지 못한 마음에 할례를 행하신다. 그분께서는 의지 속에 새로운 성질을 주입하셔서 죽은 의지로 말미암아 살아나게 하시고, 악한 의지를 선한 의지로 바꾸시며, 자원하지 않는 의지를 자원하는 의지가 되게 하시고, 고집스러운 의지를 부드러운 의지로 바꾸신다. 곧 의지를 활성화시키며 강하게 하셔서 좋은 나무가 좋은 열매를 맺히는 것처럼 선한 행위의 열매를 맺을 수 있게 하시는 것이다.
