p.2. Recent converts - for that matter people who have yet to turn their lives over to Jesus Christ - can and should practise them[i.e., the Spirititual Disciplines].

 

포스터의 '회심'개념이 얼마나 천박한 것인지를 보여준다. 내적 세계에 대한 탐구를 추구하면서, 그리고 피상성을 극복하고자 하면서도 그의 '회심'은 그대로 피상성을 그대로 드러내고 있다. 어떻게 최근의 회심자들이 '회심'했다고 하면, 아직도 그들의 삶을 그리스도에게로 넘겨야 한다는 것을 그 기본특성으로 강조될 수 있는가? 회심자는 이미 그 삶을 그리스도에게로 넘겨버린 자가 아닌가? 비록 평생토록 계속 그의 삶의 넘기는 일이 지속되어야 하고 또한 깊어져야 하는 것임에도 불구하고 그 결정적인 넘김이 이뤄진 자들이 바로 회심자이다. 이러한 나의 지적이 잘못된 것이 아님을 그의 다음과 같은 글에서도 드러난다.

If all human strivings end in moral banruptcy (and having tried it, we know it is so), and if righteousness is a gracious gift from God(as the Bible clearly states), then is it not logical to conclude that we must wait for God to come and transform us? Strangely enough, the answer is no. The analysis is correct - human striving is insufficient and righteousness is a gift from God- but the conclusion is faulty. Happily there is something we can do. We do not need to be hung on the horns of the dilemma of either human works or ideleness. God has given us the Disciplines of the spiritual life as a means of receiving his grace.  The Disciplines allow us to place ourselves before God so that he can transform us.

 

p. 24. What happens in meditation is that we create the emotional and spiritual space which allows Christ to construct an inner sanctuary in the heart. The wonderful verse 'I stand at the door and knock...' was originally penned for believers, not unbelievers(Rev.3:20). We who have turned our lives over to Christ need to know how very much he longs to eat with us, to commune with us.

 

포스터는 도덕주의와 반율법주의를 동시에 경계한다. 자신이 Celebration of Disciplines는 결코 그런 위험에 빠지는 것에 대해서 무지하지 않다고 한다. 하지만, 그의 견해는 잘못된 회심관에 기초해 있기 때문에, 자신이 경계하고자 하는 그 경고에 그만 빠져들어가 버린다. 이것이 대부분의 복음주의자, 혹은 은사주의자들의 오류이다. 자신들이 경계한다면서 빠져드는 오류이기 때문에 교정하기도 쉽지가 않다. 자신들이 다 알고 있다고 하니, 지적하여 주어도 들을 귀가 없는 것이다. 이렇게 해서 복음은 타락해가는 것이다.
