Article 8: The Saving Effectiveness of Christ's Death

 

For it was the entirely free plan and very gracious will and intention of God the Father that the enlivening and saving effectiveness of his Son's costly death should work itself out in all his chosen ones, in order that he might grant justifying faith to them only and thereby lead them without fail to salvation. In other words, it was God's will that Christ through the blood of the cross (by which he confirmed the new covenant) should effectively redeem from every people, tribe, nation, and language all those and only those who were chosen from eternity to salvation and given to him by the Father; that he should grant them faith (which, like the Holy Spirit's other saving gifts, he acquired for them by his death); that he should cleanse them by his blood from all their sins, both original and actual, whether committed before or after their coming to faith; that he should faithfully preserve them to the very end; and that he should finally present them to himself, a glorious people, without spot or wrinkle.

 

제 8 항 그리스도의 죽으심의 구원하시는 효력

 

하나님께서 택하신 자들에게만 의롭게 하는 믿음을 허락하시고 그리하여 구원에 빠짐없이 이르도록 하기 위해서, 당신의 아들의 값진 죽으심의 살려내시고 구원하시는 효력이 그 분의 모든 택하신 자들 속에서 역사하는 것은 바로 성부 하나님의 전적으로 자유로우신 계획이며 너무나도 자비로우신 뜻이시며 의도이시다. 바꾸어 말하면, 그리스도께서 십자가의 피를 통해서 (그 피로 새언약을 확증하셨다), 모든 민족, 족속, 국가, 언어의 모든 사람들 중에서 영원전부터 구원에 이르도록 선택되고 아버지께서 아들에게 주신 바 된 그들을 효과적으로 구속하시게 되는 것이 하나님의 뜻이었다; 그 뜻은, 또한, 그리스도께서 그들에게 믿음을 허락하시고(이 믿음은 성령의 다른 구원하시는 선물들처럼, 그리스도께서 당신의 죽으심으로 그들을 위해서 획득하셨다); 그들의 모든 죄들, 믿음에 이르기 전이나 그 이후에 짓게 되는 것을 막론하고, 원죄와 실제로 행하게 되는, 모든 죄들로부터 그들을 깨끗하게 씻으시고; 그들을 마지막까지 충실하게 견인하시며; 마침내는 그들을 그리스도 당신 자신에게 흠없고 점없는 한 영광스러운 백성으로 나타나게 하시는 것이다.
